As an advanced oxidation technology, the Fenton process has been widely used in the treatment of high-concentration, difficult-to-degrade, and toxic and harmful industrial organic wastewaters such as coking wastewater, landfill leachate, printing and dyeing wastewater, and pesticide wastewater, and has achieved certain results.
When treating difficult-to-degrade organic wastewater, the Fenton process has advantages that cannot be matched by general chemical methods, but due to the high price of H2O2, the cost of using it alone will be too high. Therefore, in actual use, it is usually used in conjunction with other wastewater treatment processes for the pretreatment or final deep treatment of wastewater.
The Fenton process oxidation process consists of ferrous salts and hydrogen peroxide. When the pH is low enough, H2O2 will decompose to produce hydroxyl free radicals under the catalysis of divalent iron ions, thereby triggering a series of chain reactions. The role of the Fenton process in water treatment mainly includes the oxidation and coagulation of organic matter. The Fenton process can remove organic pollutants in water bodies to varying degrees.
In the pretreatment of industrial wastewater, the difficult-to-degrade organic matter in the wastewater is partially oxidized to change their biodegradability, solubility and coagulation properties, which is conducive to subsequent treatment. In the deep treatment of industrial wastewater, if there is still a small amount of biodegradable organic matter remaining in the wastewater after physical, chemical and biochemical treatment, which cannot meet the effluent discharge requirements, the Fenton process can be used for deep treatment.
