Pretreatment
Wastewater undergoes pretreatment to remove inorganic solids, fats, oils, and greases that may hinder the anaerobic process. This includes screening and degritting to eliminate larger debris and particles, followed by initial sedimentation to settle heavier solids. These steps ensure that the subsequent anaerobic digestion process runs more smoothly and efficiently.
Anaerobic Digestion
In the anaerobic digester, the microbial process is divided into 4 stages. These 4 stages include hydrolysis, acidification, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. Initially, during the hydrolysis process, complex organic compounds are broken down into simpler forms. These compounds then undergo acidification and are converted into volatile fatty acids, alcohols, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.
Next comes acetogenesis, which further metabolizes the volatile fatty acids and alcohols into acetic acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Finally, methanogenesis occurs, where methanogenic archaea convert acetic acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide into methane (the main component of biogas), with carbon dioxide as a byproduct. This series of reactions effectively converts organic pollutants into valuable energy resources and byproducts.
Post-treatment
After the anaerobic digestion process is complete, the wastewater may still contain pollutants and pathogens. Further treatment, such as biogas treatment, is often required to meet discharge standards or achieve the intended reuse.
This may include aerobic treatment, filtration, or disinfection processes. These additional steps ensure that the treated water meets environmental regulations and is safe for discharge or reuse, completing the wastewater treatment cycle.
What is aerobic wastewater treatment?
Aerobic wastewater treatment is a biological process that uses oxygen to break down organic matter to treat sewage and industrial wastewater. Unlike anaerobic treatment, which operates without oxygen, aerobic treatment relies on the presence of oxygen to support the growth of microorganisms (aerobic bacteria) that consume organic contaminants in the wastewater.
Not only does this process significantly reduce the amount of organic matter and waste, it also converts them into stable forms such as carbon dioxide and water, making the wastewater safer for discharge or further treatment. Aerobic bacteria help digest these organic contaminants, ensuring effective treatment of sewage and other types of wastewater.
