1. Introduction to electrocatalytic oxidation technology

The organic wastewater treatment process mainly adopts electrocatalytic oxidation. Through electrocatalytic degradation on the electrode surface, the electrode surface can directly produce hydroxyl radicals that have no selectivity for the oxidation of organic and inorganic substances, so that the pollutants are completely mineralized and the pollutants in the oxidized water are removed, which is called the electrochemical combustion process; if the aqueous solution contains electrolytes such as Cl- and SO42- (such as sodium sulfate, chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorate, etc.), the peroxide generated catalytically oxidizes the pollutants in the water, thereby reducing the COD of the organic wastewater. This process is called the electrochemical conversion process.

The main reactions of the electrolysis process are as follows:

Anode reaction: 4OH- →O2+2HO+4e

Cathode reaction: O+HO+2e→HO-+OH

Total reaction: O+2OH→HO

The hydroxyl radicals generated by electrolysis cause the wastewater to produce secondary reactions under alkaline conditions, degrading the pollutants or directly decomposing them into CO or converting them into other simple compounds.

The types of reactions for treating wastewater in electrocatalytic oxidation reactors can be divided into direct electrolysis and indirect electrolysis.
